[Jamie just takes the hug in silence. In his mind he's remembering how he woke up to find Sandy and the other Guardians in his room, the chaos that followed, the golden sand overcoming the black, the sand-shaped dreams, Sandy painting, telling stories with runic magic, the pictures of kids in the Guardian's past, all of the naps together. Everything. All of it was gone. It didn't matter if he'd go home one day and Sandy would be there waiting.
Someone would have to get Sandy's belongings from the bank because Jamie couldn't bear to leave it there. He'd put the book he and Alice made next to the one they made for Tooth.
One day he would lose people he cared about that wouldn't be from home.
[She'd be one of those people, and he'd be one of hers. In fact, there wasn't a single person outside of the Hatter who she would ever get to see again. No matter how much she believed in the guardians, there was no guarantee she'd ever get to actually meet and speak with them again.
And then there was Jamie.
She takes a deep breath as she finally pulls away, just a little.]
Do you still... want to go on that walk or... we could just... sit down and... I don't know... [Cuddle maybe, she did that with the TARDIS and her pets.]
[He doesn't know how he'll feel or what he'll do if Alice ever left. They spend a lot of their time together, at school and outside of it. Alice is the closest friend his age that he has.
Jamie nods and then shakes his head - the order to the words that she says.]
[He gives her hand a grateful squeeze and heads out the front door. There isn't really any place in particular that Jamie has in mind so aimless wandering it is.]
Did you know that when people leave their stuff goes to the bank?
Yeah, that's where Tooth's was after she left. It's weird, right? For stuff to go there even though we don't live in the welcome houses.
[Jamie could see why it would happen in the welcome houses as the rooms were given over to new people but there were still Guardians living in the ice rink apartment.]
Yeah, maybe. [He doesn't want to ask why the gods would do the same to people who didn't live alone though. Mostly because he's not sure he wants the answer.]
Sandy would want us to keep his belongings for him.
[She nods.] When... some of my friends left, they would leave letters of who got things. I mean... it gets a little hard when there are two Alices and they know both of us... but, I would be specific. You... could be specific. That way... we have something to remember each other by.
[He knows that whatever Guardians were left would do what he put in a letter. Yet part of him also wants to give her something now - even if he doesn't know what it would be.]
[She meets his gaze, if only for a moment, but she has to look down because she doesn't want to look at him just then. She knows she has to prepare though, in the off chance it ever happened, they have to be ready. Even if she doesn't like it....
She swallows and blinks when they suddenly change directions.]
[He doesn't say anything but instead shakes his head and continues to lead her towards the ice rink. Once there he continues towards the back where the door leading up to the apartment is. Up the stairs and towards his room. Outside his room is where he leaves Alice though the door stays open and she can clearly see him grab something off of his bed.
When he returns, he holds up a worn and patched rabbit - one that clearly has spent a great deal of time with its owner and been cared for for years.]
Here. You should have Zena. He always gives me hope when I need it.
[Alice's curiosity was piqued by the sudden determination that Jamie led her with through the city. She knew where they were going the closer they got to the rink, having traveled the path multiple times. She blinked as they went straight to the apartment but didn't ask anything since Jamie wasn't answering any questions.
When he let go of her hand she peeked to see what he was doing, wanting to ask and nearly biting her tongue so she wouldn't.
When he comes back and suddenly holds out the rabbit to her, her eyes widen as she suddenly looks at Zena. She knows this rabbit, she knows it quite well. Whenever she slept over at Jamie's she'd see Zena. When they mad Jack's Christmas book, Jamie told her all about the conversation he had had with Zena.
Alice didn't even know her mouth was agape until she had to close it to swallow. Finally she broke her gaze away from Zena to look at Jamie, looking for any sort of doubt. Slowly and with shaking hands, she reached up to grab it, her fingers brushing his. The rabbit was in her hands before she even really comprehended that the rabbit was in her hand.
When she took a deep breath, her surprise wore off and she was suddenly hugging Jamie as tight as she could. Almost tackling him to the ground as her arms were around his shoulders, rabbit clasped tightly in her hands.]
[The entire time she's staring at the bunny, trying to decide whether to take it or not, Jamie is watching her. She is one of the few people in this world who knows what this rabbit means to him. Jamie's probably even told her how long he had the rabbit before. Knows just how it always sits on his bed and how it's one of the few things that came from his home.
Probably why she's staring in surprise at it and then looking up at him as if for conformation. All he can do is nod when she looks at him. He'll miss the rabbit, but not as much as he'd miss Alice if she suddenly wasn't in his life anymore. Somehow the girl has become such a big part of his life here. She's not like the friends he left behind in Burgess.
Somehow she's become more. Jamie isn't quite sure what that means just yet but the idea that one day he might not be able to see her again is extremely painful.
Finally, after what seemed like forever, she took the rabbit though it almost appeared that she wasn't quite aware of what she was doing. Then he had an armful of Alice and stumbles back at the sheer force of it. Jamie wraps his arms around her in return, holding her just as tightly as if that could stop her from disappearing right there.]
[She was holding onto him as tightly as he her. She didn't know what to do when this was all over, when eventually they had to go home and he wouldn't be there. Not just him, but Jack, the Doctors, the TARDIS, and so many others, but especially Jamie. It hurt, it made a sharp sting in her chest and her eyes clench tight lest they burn from unshed tears. She just held onto him and the rabbit with everything she could. It suddenly felt so unfair, knowing that she might never see him again.
She swallowed around the cry of outrage and sorrow that welled up in her throat to instead whisper:]
[Maybe if they hold tight enough they won't lose anyone else. Or maybe they'll leave to the same place. If only it worked that way - if it did surely other people would have done it by now. Jamie would never let go of the people he cared about most if it did. At least then they'd be together no matter where they went and they won't have to hurt anymore. Not even Jack's words help the hurt of losing someone here.
[She held onto him a bit longer before finally letting go, pulling away only a little bit. She smiled, blushing a bit as she kept a hold on Zena. She was glad to have Jamie, glad to have him a part of her life, just like she was for Sandy and Jack and the Doctor. She was perhaps even more grateful for him in some ways, he was her best friend, he could understand things that others may not. She loved him.]
