Maybe. One of the gods does have telepathy and maybe he learned about your imaginary friend.

That would be Mr. Loki... well... I do talk with him often.

[firstbeliever]

So that could be how he learned about your friend. Or it could be that your imaginary world really exists out there somewhere.

[madcuriosity]

Well... but that would mean I really went to it. Which... [That actually means she's a queen.] It isn't impossible. More curious things have happened.

[firstbeliever]

Is it wrong to think that you went to another world? [Jamie would like to go to another world.] What kind of things?

[madcuriosity]

No, nothing wrong. But it's a world of my own making... Or I thought it was.

Well, I'm rather sure my making my own dragon is far more curious than a talking rabbit.

[firstbeliever]

Well, maybe you really made it when you dreamed it up.

I don't know, both are kind of interesting.

[madcuriosity]

Me? Have that sort of power?

I didn't say uninteresting or less, simply more curious.

[firstbeliever]

Sure! Kids have a lot of power. Even the Guardians can't survive without our belief in them. When I was the last kid in the world to believe in them they were really weak. Tooth couldn't fly, Bunny was tiny and Santa could barely lift his swords.

Still both pretty curious.

[madcuriosity]

Jamie, why do you think adults forget something so important as belief? The guardians are hundreds, some thousands of years old. You don't think we'll stop believing, do you? I don't ever want to stop.

Well I didn't say they weren't. Although I think we're thinking of two different bunnies?

[firstbeliever]

[That makes him frown.] I think it's because they start to worry about different things. Getting a job, having a family, money - things like that. As kids we don't have to worry about stuff like that because we have parents or guardians who do it for us. We still get to dream about what sort of job we want or the family we can have and we can spend money on the things we want instead of the stuff we need.

[Jamie pauses.]

I don't know. But I don't ever want to stop believing either, Alice. And I want to help other people believe in them forever.

The Easter Bunny is the only one I know of.

[madcuriosity]

Do you think there are guardians for adults? [She should ask Jack and the others, she thinks.] I think... if adults had guardians too, it would be easier for them to remember, to worry less. If adults had guardians as wonderful as ours then they may not think it so strange to hold on to the belief.

We'll protect them, all of them. We can make sure no one says they aren't real.

Mine is a White Rabbit. Quite the skittish dear, always late.

[firstbeliever]

Jack mentioned there was Cupid. [But that was all he said at the time when Jamie questioned him about it.] I don't know if there are others. I guess...it's just harder to believe when people get older.

We should write a book about them. Like, we could ask them to tell us a story about something that happened and we could write it out and put pictures to it for everyone to read.

Never heard of it. [He doesn't know if it's a boy or a girl so he goes with 'it'.]

I'll ask Sandy. He knows better than anyone about the coming and going of such things.

JAMIE! Jamie that is a splendid idea for a book! Ah! But we mustn't tell them! We'll make it a Christmas present! A story of their choosing for each one of them and then make a big book of them for Asgard!

I doubt you would! Mr. Rabbit is only from Wonderland.

Yeah, I think he's one of the oldest Guardians.

[He grins.] Okay. [Then he starts to whisper.] I'll get Jack and Tooth to tell me bedtime stories about things that happened and you can talk to Sandy so they don't get suspicious.

Maybe he'll show up here one day too like your other friend.

[madcuriosity]

Hmm, he is. He told me. He was around before any sort of animal even existed! You should ask him to show you his sketchpad about his timeline.

Perfect. Let's plan for it soon! I think Christmas is nearing with this sort of weather!

Well, I would love for the White Rabbit. But Cheshire is whom I want most.

I will.

Then I'll ask one of them to tell me a story tonight. [So they can start working on the book.]

The Cheshire?

Ah, the Cheshire Cat, actually. Quite an intelligent puss.

Does the Cheshire Cat talk too?

He does. He's incredibly clever! And he can disappear and reappear and separate parts of his body from himself. So a grin might linger while the cat is gone.

Wow, that sounds like the best cat ever.

That's because he is. Only Dinah even comes close.

Who's Dinah?

Dinah is my pet cat back home. She's a beautiful black cat with two kittens and incredibly clever. She can even play chess and is trying to teach it to her kittens.

Really? I've never seen a cat play chess before. She sounds better than I am at the game.
